The bigger gator trout like to push in super shallow in the winter months, and in summer, they move to deeper, moving-water grass flats.
Trolling is an excellent technique that can be used to minimize the prospecting time. Spoons, shallow diving plugs, and jigs with a bait fish tail can all be used. Anglers should troll slowly, just above idle speed, over various steps until fish are located.
While you can catch sea trout in these backwater areas year-round, success in the surf is more seasonal. Usually spring is the best time to fish for spotted sea trout in the surf when the baitfish come close to shore. During the summer there are still plenty of spotted sea trout in the surf, but they are generally on the smaller side. Jigs rigged with a soft plastic are a great artificial bait to use.
